A generation of pre-teens is being prematurely 'sexualised' by cynical retailers and a manipulative entertainments industry, says Judith Woods. There can't be a woman in the land who didn't wince at the pitiful sight of a troubled Britney Spears shaving off her high-maintenance hair in a public act of self-loathing. The singer's erratic behaviour has given rise to many tabloid headlines in recent months, but there was something very chilling, very symbolic about this dramatic gesture; as though she were casting off her sexuality with each lock that fell to the floor. In many ways hers is the ultimate modern morality tale, right down to its shocking denouement. It is a tale of the unremitting exploitation of her youthful sexuality in public, and the personal price she has paid in private. She had a ready-made fan base from the Disney show, but she needed to grab the attention of an adult audience, too, to maximise sales. And so, in the video, Spears was made to pout and gyrate in a schoolgirl uniform, breasts straining beneath her open blouse as she sucked provocatively on a lollipop, a chorus line of knowing, knee-socked Lolitas by her side. It was paedo-pop at its most blatant. Grown-ups certainly noticed, while her tweenage fans were instantly smitten by her trailer-park glamour, even if they were only dimly aware of the nuances at work. From the outset, Spears's sexuality was relentlessly marketed by her handlers.
