Men worried about their fertility can now check their sperm count and quality from the comfort of their own living room — with a smartphone app. Using a special linked device, the innovative programme also shows a live video of a sperm sample and offers a lifestyle programme, devised by fertility experts, which — its makers claim — will improve conception chances within 90 days. Danish-developed ExSeed uses the same software found in fertility clinics. The company surveyed 1, men aged 25 to 54 in the UK and found that while 43 per cent of men were concerned about their fertility, only 18 per cent wanted to get tested and just five per cent had actually been tested — a big discrepancy. ExSeed has already been used by more than men in Denmark, with seven reported pregnancies to date. To test sperm with ExSeed, a man places a sample on a glass slide provided, then inserts it into a special device and places this underneath his smartphone camera, allowing him to see his sample in real-time.

Eavesdropping on sperm whales has revealed that they can convey a lot of information about themselves in just a few clicks. Near the Caribbean island of Dominica, there is one group of sperm whales that has interested researchers for over a decade. Like others in their species, they have complex social lives. But what makes this particular group special is that they live in small family units, allowing researchers to quickly identify individual whales. The ability to do this has offered us unprecedented insights into their world. For instance, we know that sperm whales remember their friends and family units for many years. It has now become apparent that each individual whale makes unique calls. These are similar to two kinds of markers that humans use to identify ourselves: our names and voices.
The analysis is based on frame by frame detection of sperm heads on video clips and building precise tracks which reveal the nature of sperm movement and provide sperm concentration value. The total number of sperms is also calculated automatically. One frame with tracks is automatically saved to database record to serve as visual support in the report or you can save a suitable frame yourself. Pointing with your mouse cursor to a track, you can see the exact values of the parameters for the selected spermatozoon and classification result in a pop-up window. The clip can be played again, rewound, played frame by frame for detailed analysis. You can save clips to your hard disc uncompressed without loss of quality or by using virtually any codec installed on your PC xVid codec is recommended. You can adjust detection threshold and also change the classification limits if required. Based on the parameters mentioned above, the motility of each spermatozoon is graded A, B, C or D WHO , according to whether it shows:. Additionally, the software enables the user to assess the concentration of: White blood cells Immature germ cells Round cells Flexible tool for adjustment of sperm head detection will let you work with both bright field and phase contrast negative phase contrast yields the best results and not only human sperms but also many animal species.
